Papua New Guinea, which occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, is usually where coffee labeled New Guinea is grown. Coffee is cultivated by peasants on small plantations in the mountain highlands, and processed using the wet method. Two of New Guinea’s most famous coffees are Sigri and Arona. These coffees are less acidic and aromatic than the best coffees of Sulawesi and less full-bodied than the best Sumatrans, but nonetheless they are well-balanced with a fruity aroma and earthy body. A medium to dark roast is generally favored for achieving this coffee’s peak complexity.
By the time Papua New Guinea was granted independence from Australia in 1975, thousands of little coffee tree gardens were scattered across the country. Grown by isolated and primitive tribes, these gardens ranged from a few dozen to a hundred trees. Today, coffee is the economic backbone of the Papua New Guinea people, and their specialty has gained immense popularity with coffee lovers across the globe. Typically used for filter-drip coffee, it has a very distinct stout body and flavor. Perfect for those days when a little extra relaxation goes a long way. Enjoy this premium coffee from one of the world’s last great uncharted territories!
